Go with the flow & learn as you go.

Yet again, it’s been months since our last blog. The last one was inspired by a challenging time in our journey. Since then we have had a full summer with friends, family, and lots of good wine!

I’m really excited about the change in seasons, and feel a shift in our life. Nathan has nearly fully recovered from his 2nd torn Achilles and is getting back into training and I’ve recently started working with new clients and will be teaching circuit classes at Union (starting this week!).

I titled this blog “Go with the Flow” because it’s something that I really live by. You’ll often hear me saying, “I’m going with the flow”. Sometimes when I tell Nathan “Don’t worry, things will be fine, I’m just going with the flow”, he feels like I’m not being accountable and there’s no direction. The truth is, I am accountable because I’m accountable to all the lessons I’ve learned a long the way. So really, I’m going with the flow, BUT also learning as I go. Each and every decision I make, or opportunity I take, is a reflection of things I’ve learned along the way, and is still aligned with the direction I’m moving in. We can’t always predict the way life is going to to, what opportunities may come, and what we are going to be doing even a year from now, but we can be open, and be in control of the decisions we make.

Life has certainly brought many great things, people, experiences, and opportunities my way. Some of the best ones, I could have never imagined in my life. If I had a looking glass when I was in high school, I would have never guessed that one day I would live in Bermuda and work in the Reinsurance Industry (Reinsurance what?). Then when I was working in Bermuda, I never would have dreamed of having my own health and wellness business and to be living in Calgary. Nicaragua was a country I knew very little about, and now we have a beautiful piece of land there and a year full of memories.

I’m living my 30’s now (and it’s a hell of fun!), and my life has been filled with adventures that came from being open and going with the flow. As the years go by, I’ve learned a lot more about what I like and what I don’t, I’ve developed ideas of my own, and have a lot more direction.

I find it interesting (and can admit that I may have been a bit jealous at times) because some people really know what they want, and it’s mapped out from the beginning. “I want to become a doctor, therefore, every decision I make will get me one step closer.” And then, they become doctors! Their path looks more like a straight line and arrow that gets them to where they’ve always wanted to be. Maybe that resonates with you or maybe your path is a bit more “squiggly” like mine. There’s pro’s and con’s to both, and at different points in our life or even with different aspects of our lives, we may crave more of the squiggly journey, and other times, we just want that direct line and arrow.

Are you all about the squiggly line, or straight line and arrow route?

“You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith and hope.”  ~Thomas Merton

I like that quote although I may add to it and say, “embrace them with courage, faith, experience, and hope”!
